One thing I can say about myself, I was not much of a romantic.
Entering college in California, I was already quite jaded when it came to matters of the heart at such an early age. I’ve had my share of heartaches and have had my heart broken quite a number of times so I felt that all those mushy things, of seeing through rose colored lenses is just a bunch of hooey best reserved for the naivete of Hollywood romance flicks. That is, until my last year in college.
That was the year I met Lindsey. She was an exchange student in my university. Lindsey was London born and raised. I actually found her quite a bit of a snob when I first met her and was not even planning on really pursuing any kind of friendship if not for some twist of fate when we were chosen to become team mates in a one of my class projects. I immediately discovered that the aloofness was actually shyness – that she was quite timid and sweet.
In fact, she was such a wonderful girl that I could not help but fall for her. Fortunately, she also took a chance in a geek like me and from that one class project our relationship blossomed. It was such a pain to finally see her go after her exchange program lapsed. We promised each other that we will make things work despite the distance especially since she will be pursuing her career here in the US.
The first week after she left, I was trying to think of a great way of surprising her. I thought of flowers because she loves receiving them but the distance was going to be an issue especially if I have fresh flowers Fedexed (yeah right!). A good buddy of mine suggest that I buy flowers online. I thought at first that he was kidding. But when I went online I discovered that I can indeed arrange or a flower delivery in London. So what I did was choose a UK florist who already has an impeccable reputation, bought the flowers online and scheduled the flower delivery in London, where Lindsey lives. Lindsey received the fresh flowers a day after I ordered it online and I received a call from her. She said that it was the sweetest thing anyone has done for her. It was also a great opportunity for me to show her that I am serious with our relationship. I think I also made her more sure of her commitment to me – and all of these happened because of flowers. I’m now a frequent customer of that UK florist and I always make a flower delivery to London either at Lindsey’s house or at the office where she interns.
This has become our monthly ritual – the flowers signifying a promise that we have kept. In a few more months she will be going back to the US to work. I can’t wait to see her again. Not bad for a guy who is supposed to be jaded, eh?
